I felt like David Attenborough yesterday - gathered my rain coat, gumboots, thermos, vegemite sandwich and beanie and headed off to Lake Clifton with the view of taking some amazing shots of the full moon knee-deep in lake. [Unfortunately], the weather wasn't behaving so we ended up at Fremantle eating fish and chips. But the storm passed and we were left with some nice wet, shiny nightshots to take - and even the full moon paid a visit!!

A good friend has just bought a new DSLR which was a great excuse to get out early to King's Park yesterday morning for a spectactular sunrise. The beautiful clouds the evening before were promising but unfortunately had disappeared by the morning! We were however, treated to a very [warm] beautiful sun rising up over the hills.

I tried my second panorama... This one has 8 images of 3 exposures each and made one rather large file!!! Here it is:

Day 7 - The Wagon

Before I indulge in my misery at the sale of my beloved wagon, can you please imagine some schmalzy violin playing in the background? Thanks.

So my wagon was bought at the auctions in 2003 which was my first year of teaching and the year I got married. Also, the year we got Ferris and the year we bought our first house. It was there for all those wonderful moments in life and now it's telling us it wants to move on. My heart is broken.

People have ridiculed my wagon but can't help but admire it's usefulness when it can fit several IKEA flat packs, a car fridge, 2 strollers, a double pram, a suitcase and $187 worth of Woolworths groceries.

I will now take the reins of another falcon - Andrew's white sedan. It just won't be the same. Particularly with that big ginormous gas tank taking up half of it's miniscule boot. One day I hope to run into The Wagon (not literally) and reminisce the old days - I just hope I don't run into it at the wreckers!!

Day 6 - Ferris the Superdog

I tell this story to Caitlin at least twice a week (in a bit more of a dramatic fashion though):

Just before we got married we were at a Pet Shop getting some fish food when I happened to see some Shih tzu X Silky Terrier puppies. They were black and tan and were so cute. One little puppy in particular was all black except for tan paws and a white and tan chest. He was lovely and playful. But one of 'those looks' from my beloved and I headed out empty-handed.

A week later we happened to be driving past the same pet shop when I asked if we could just visit for a second. I was disappointed to find all the puppies gone. But then I realised there was one left and it just so happened to be the friendly one with the tan and white chest.

Half an hour later we left, me cuddling a tiny, tiny little puppy. That was nearly 9 years ago and Ferris (yes, named after the movie) hasn't left our side since. He's been on holidays with us (including a road trip across the Nullabor), moved houses with us and witnessed the birth of our 2 kids (well, not the actual birth. I don't think that's allowed.) In October last year, we thought we were going to lose him after he got run over but he has bounced back (minus 1 leg) and is just as loving and playful as ever. Tonight, on day 6 of the 365 project I took a photo of our old, best friend:

Okay, so Day 5 and I didn't actually get the camera out of the case. However! I was lucky enough to attend the Hopman Cup and took a photo with my camera before it turned 12pm (only just - the matches went forever!)

Day 4 - argh!

Well, it's 10:11pm on Day 4 of the 365 challenge and I've just remembered that I haven't posted any photos up today! Catastrophic.. particularly as I'm not even past the 1st week. But I did take photos today - when my new bouncer kit arrived from the friendly Australia Post man who really did not plan his route very well when he drove straight past the house an hour earlier than when he delivered my goods.

As always, Caitlin was a willing participant in the whole photography process so here she is - as I test out my new toy.

Day 2 - Daniel's Birthday

My little boy turned 2 today! We had a very chilled day at home to give him an opportunity to play with his new train table and then we had family around for an evening birthday party. He had a special profiterole birthday tower and then enjoyed going down the water slide dozens of times. It was especially fun that Uncle Adam could give him a push and this is what today's photo is of:

Day 1 of the 365 Challenge

This year I plan to take part in the 365 Project where I will capture and present a new photo every day for 365 days! Taralee Wilson is taking part too so hopefully that will keep me on track. (And I plan on holding her accountable too!)

This morning provided a great opportunity to start when my little boy woke up way too early for New Year's Day. Everyone else in the house really needed a sleep-in from New Year's Eve the night before. I quickly loaded him up in the car before he went and did his traditional good morning routine (jump on sleeping bodies and yell 'Wake up!').

We ended up at Heathcote which has The Best Playground in Perth not to mention some spectacular views which provided plenty of scope for amazing photos. A beautiful and memorable New Year's morning with my lovely son.

Proof that I was up really early (mmm... maybe the time on the big tower clock at Heathcote is a tad out!)

Christmas

Christmas is a busy time for our family with 2 birthdays and Christmas within a week of each other. But it's also our most special time of the year to celebrate the really important things in our life.

I haven't posted many photos recently so here is a snapshot (no pun intended!) of the last month or so.

It seems like yesterday that I very nervously walked out the door and left Caitlin at her first Prekindy Session. She has had the most wonderful year with the most wonderful staff and program. Tears were shed at her 'graduation'!

Pentland Alpaca Farm

I can't post any of the shots of my children holding the rabbits as I dont want anyone reporting us to the RSPCA! (Despite the disturbing photos, no rabbits were harmed) Instead I thought this one was rather warm and lovely. (and non-distressing)

If you're down Denmark's way, Pentland Alpaca Farm is well worth the visit - and is a lovely drive to get to.

I'm still wondering if this morning really happened as my memory of it is a bit hazy: waking up at 3:30am and trekking out to Bells Rapids in the Swan Valley with my Mum and Shirley Milburn in the name of photography. The sunrise we were so eager to be in time for wasn't a great success but the morning was certainly memorable if not for the speeding fine, the unexpected off-road adventure and the lovely breakfast in Guildford.

Fix it Friday

This week's fix it Friday is irresistable with all those lovely pumpkins!

I used Lightroom 3 to achieve the edit! Firstly I used one of my favourite presets lately called "Sarahjiginko" which was a free one I picked up from somewhere (it comes in such a lovely set). I did a tiny bit of spot removal and then I underexposed the entire image (pushed the bar as low as it would go) and then used a ginormous exposure brush to correct the exposure where the girl is sitting. This gave it the off-centre vignette. Then using the automask I lightened a few of the pumpkins at the front and made a few slight adjustments to the vibrance, clarity and contrast.

Fears

“Fear is a darkroom where negatives develop.”

There isn’t a huge amount I’m scared of. I worry about money frequently (which comes with the territory when you’re a single income family). I worry how we’re going to get the stains out of the carpet at the end of each day when I vacuum and I’m terrified that one of my children will run on the road.

But mostly, I’m absolutely, mind-numbingly petrified of snakes. I can’t watch one on television and I most certainly can’t walk past one at the Zoo. (I wait at the exit door of the Reptile House!) Just thinking about it is sending my heart rate through the roof.

This fear must have originated somewhere. I remember two instances from my childhood. The first is “The Snake Man” visiting our school when I was twelve years old and my teacher adamant that I would hold it. I ended up running over the other side of the oval so I’m guessing the fear was already ingrained. And the second memory is of me sitting in front of the television and my Dad sticking a blue tongue lizard in front of my face. It was terrifying. But then, that wasn’t a snake. Mind you – I won’t go near a blue tongue lizard either.

I’ve been thinking about this because today Animal Ark visited my daughter’s Prekindy. She came out unable to contain her excitement. In fact, she laughed for a full two minutes before she was able to tell me what was so wonderful. She had held a frog, insects, a lizard and horrifyingly - a snake! What’s more the snake was (apparently) wrapped around her head.

As she was telling me I could feel a snake of terror climb up my spine. It took every ounce of me to keep a smile on my face and to refrain from squeezing her hand as we walked towards the car. She is still grinning from ear to ear about it and I am so proud of her. My husband and I, of course, have given her a serious talk about not touching a snake if she ever sees one.

I sincerely hope that she still feels the same way in fifteen years time. She is so completely and utterly in awe of God’s creation. Every new experience is a whole new discovery for her. For me, being a Mum of a three year old is truly humbling and exciting. I have the privilege of rediscovering all the parts of the world that I dismiss because of my fear or indifference.

Time to Write

I have started writing this after having placed my daughter in front of the television and my son in his cot. The need for me to sit down and write has been building up for around a week. Unfortunately, my daughter’s constant list of demands (drink, blanket, volume increased) and my son’s unwillingness to sleep have meant that I still haven’t finished a paragraph in the last fifteen minutes. And such is my life at present!

I love to write and put words and thoughts on paper. Language is an art that I have enough understanding about to manipulate. I like to imagine that what I have to say is poignant, meaningful and engaging. Up until now I have been missing two things: 1. Time to sit down and write without interruption and 2. An audience.

My constant reference for information is Wikepedia (not a great admission I know). This is how they (well, someone!) define a writer: A writer is anyone who creates a written work. I’m guessing that makes me a writer in that I have created many written works – assignments, a thesis, a plethora of short stories and a couple of unfinished novels. The only thing that is missing is an audience.

And so, the birth of this blog. I know, it’s called “Nicole Fenwick Photography” because that is another of my passions. In a future post I intend to describe myself but for now I just need to put something up here. I’ve started a postgraduate course for writing and I intend to fulfill my dream of being a “writer”. My first goal is to start a blog and start being “read”.

Please feel free to comment and be patient with me as I am not sure of Blog Etiquette. But I plan to become informed!!

My son is still pleading to get out of his cot but on the upside, “Play School” has my daughter enthralled. I guess some days are better than others and I’ll take what I can to get time to write.
